What Are You Thinking About?

This morning I woke up and knew I needed to write something.  God has been showing me so much lately, and I wish I could just sit down and share it all, but I was reminded by Him to be led by The Holy Spirit in my writing.  I though on my gift on encouragement and how I have used it to be a blessing to others. God has been pointing that out to me more and more  lately, and it’s been encouraging to see some of the fruit, but also keep in humble check.  At church, we are talking about  Matters of the Heart, and how are heart’s are depraved, and how we need to ask God for a renewed and purified heart.  As I read the back of the worship folder, I was drawn to the last three points:  (ABC’s)

Ask God to Purify Your Heart,

Believe God’s Word, and

Cooperate with the Holy  Spirit

All morning, God has been pursuing me over and over again with the first Point; Ask God to Purify your Heart.  He brought to mind a song that I will share, which I often use as a prayer.  I found myself in prayer crying  out to  God to take outallof the things that aren’t from Him.  I had songs of renew my heart coming out of me.  I so desperately want to be Holy like God, but realize how so  far from it I actually am.  I got frustrated trying to figure out what scripture I could share; there are so  many…  Then God put this verse in my heat:

Philippians 4:8-9 NLT

8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.9 Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.

Isn’t that an awesome verse!, and a great reminder of how we need to be thinking as followers of Christ.

A few minutes later this morning, I got a call from one of my friends.  As we were talking on different matters, we both agreed on the importance of what comes out of our mouths and how we need to strive to keep our minds focused on the things of God.  We agreed that yes, we all have our peeks and valley’s in life; God uses those to stretch, strengthen and teach us, but we also need to become aware of our thinking; this too, is something else God has been pointing out to me more and more.  If we’re not careful, we can get stuck in  our negative thinking and before we know it, it will start to come out of us.  Unfortunately, I know many Christians today who are stuck in negative thinking.  I realize it’s a process, but step one, I think, is becoming consciously aware of what you are thinking and saying, and then asking if it is of God or of flesh.  It’s not to say  that we are perfect or better, because no one is, but if we really want to have the transforming power of Christ in our lives, we must start thinking right.  As I’ve been typing, God has been putting more scripture in my heart to share.  Mat. 15:19 and Jer. 17:9 drivehome the point I’m trying ot make.

Matthew 15:19 (The Message)

16-20Jesus replied, "You, too? Are you being willfully stupid? Don’t you know that anything that is swallowed works its way through the intestines and is finally defecated? But what comes out of the mouth gets its start in the heart. It’s from the heart that we vomit up evil arguments, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, lies, and cussing. That’s what pollutes. Eating or not eating certain foods, washing or notwashingyour hands—that’s neither here nor there."

Jeremiah 17:9 (The Message)

9-10“The heart is hopelessly dark and deceitful,
a puzzle that no one can figure out.
But I, God, search the heart
   and examine the mind.
I get to the heart of the human.
I get to the root of things.
I treat them as they really are,
not as they pretend to be.”

As I am being drawn to these verses,  I vividly remember how God had led me to a sermon by  Francis Chan last week on this very thing.   It’s one that I downloaded on itunes, and is a few years old, which makes me see that God is trying to teach me these very important lessons.  Here is the link if you are interested in watching it:

You will need to scroll to: Episode Date:  12/10/06   Title: “Choose Your Words Wisely”

So let me encourage you by reminding us all that:

Our Words are powerful

Our thoughts our powerful

Our hearts hold the key to both

What are thinking about?  Is it from God or your  flesh?  Try getting in the habit of asking yourself these questions.

What do you need God to  take out of your heart today?

As I have learned with many things, it’s not an instantaneous fix.  It’s a processs of constently surrendering our junk over to God.  There are things in  my life that I have been completely set free from, but there are also things in my heart that need to go; some things that I have been working on for years.  I’ve gotten to a place in  my walk where I’ve often said "God, if it’s notfromyou, I don’t  want it, take it all away", and yes, there’s still stuff in there, and will be until the day I die; but the more I give it to Him, the freer I get, and there is nothing better than living in the freedom, peace and joy of Christ alone!  So now here are a few songs God has put on my heart to share and encouage you with as you  go to the Father and ask Him to purify your heart so you can become more like Him.  May God Bless you in your obedience and surrender !    Robin

  1. I loved this post, especially the ABC. Once we decide to cooperate with the Holy Spirit, that is when we begin to see real change in our lives.
